The SoBe Life Walking Day a success
by Chrystal Johnson
The rain didn’t stop the Million Pound Challenge SoBe Life Walking Day last Saturday; participants arrived and walked around inside the Renaissance Center to achieve their three-mile goal.
“Fitness has to become a priority for our community,” said Heaster Wheeler, executive director, Detroit Branch NAACP. “If we want to live a longer life we must exercise.”
Along with Wheeler, Detroit City Councilwoman Alberta Tinsley-Talabi, and Radio Host, CoCo from WJLB FM 98 acted as ambassadors for walking participants. They encouraged the crowd to stay on pace with their workout regimen and to continue the goal to live a healthy lifestyle.
“Don’t be afraid to restart your life everyday,” CoCo said. “Constantly work on you, change is not the enemy.”
The Pepsi Bottling Group provided SoBe Life water in five flavors and Aquafina water. Mix 92.3 was on-site hyping up the crowd as they weighed in with volunteers from the Weight Watchers Group. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan also demonstrated how much sugar is in foods and alternative methods to eating healthy.
Before and after the workout Bally Total Fitness, Fitness Director, Tiroca Battle demonstrated proper stretching techniques and answered questions about exercising and weight loss goals.
More than 50 people registered for the Challenge Saturday including Detroit resident Elicia Mauldin.
“I made up my mind to join the Challenge to promote a healthy mind, body and spirit,” she said. “
Ponitac resident, Kerry Turnipseed, said he has lost up to 15 pounds since joining the Challenge at the beginning of the year.
“I changed my diet by cutting out fried foods and junk,” he said. “I walk, eat more vegetables and drink lots of water to help me lose weight.”
“I’m taking baby steps, a little bit at a time.”
